‘Koyaanisqatsi’ // Godfrey Reggio, 1975-1982.

Translating to “a life out of balance”, the Hopi Indian word Koyaanisqatsi provides an apt title for a visually and auditory unbalanced film from Godfrey Reggio. Everything has been considered however, and the unbalance is intended to cause unease and distress. It’s an apocalyptic vision of the “collision of two different worlds – urban life and technology versus the environment”. It addresses the growingly obvious divide between the natural and manmade world, and humankind’s ability to exploit this exponentially. “We do not live with nature any longer; we live above it, off of it as it were”.

KOYAANISQATSI is whatever you wish to make of it.
